Who are you? // ¿Quién tú eres?
Hi, I’m Alejandro! I am from Chihuahua, Chihuahua, Mexico. I currently live in Brooklyn, New York. I am a photographer and a creative director for an indie record label.
¡Hola, soy Alejandro! Soy de Chihuahua, Chihuahua, México. Actualmente vivo en Brooklyn, Nueva York. Soy fotógrafo y director creativo de un una disquera independiente.
What’s been going on for you lately? // ¿Qué has echo recientemente?
The real questions is “what hasn’t been going on…” it was a wild 2020 and 2020 part two. The pandemic has really put a lot of my demons in front of me. This July will be 20 years since I moved to the USA and I can finally see what it has done to my family and I. I guess I had to really grow up to understand myself but I been asking myself these questions almost daily:
“Was it worth it?”
“What would I be like if I stayed in Mexico?”
“At what cost?”
La verdadera pregunta es “¿qué no ha pasado?” Fue un 2020 loco y ahora 2020 parte 2. La pandemia en verdad a puesto mis demonios enfrente de mí. Este julio cumpliré 20 años en Estados Unidos y finalmente puedo ver lo que este país nos a hecho a mi familia y a mí. Pero en realidad siento que tenia que crecer para entenderme a mi mismo y recientemente me he estado preguntando estas preguntas casi diario:
“¿Valió la pena?”
“¿Cómo seria yo si me hubiera quedado en México?”
“¿A qué costo?”
Film vs digital? // ¿Analogo vs digital?
Film, 100% I am very impatient and film has truly taught me the process of being patient and challenging myself. To me, shooting film is a lot more difficult, lots of manual work so the end result can be more rewarding but again it can be very draining. I’ve burnt through hundreds of rolls and have been unhappy with the results but hey, that’s life you really have to trust the process and take the bad shots to truly create something beautiful. Also, I hate, like hate, going through a million digital pictures to find the money shot. With film I have a max of 36 shots to pick from. Of course, waiting for that roll to come out and when that photograph looks exactly as you imagined or finding a surprise picture months later in a random roll… awww those feels are incomparable :)
Analogo, 100%. Soy muy impaciente y usar el modo análogo me a enseñado el proceso de ser paciente y desafiarme a mí mismo. Para mí, usar análogo es más difícil, mucho trabajo manual y pues así el resultado final puede ser mas valioso pero también muy agotador. Al principio jodia tantos rollos por falta de experiencia y es duro pero así es la vida tienes que confiar en el proceso y tomar fotos malas para en verdad crear algo hermoso. Otra razón por la que prefiero el modo análogo es porque odio, literal odio pasar el tiempo viendo millones de fotos digitales para encontrar “the money shot”. Con cámara de rollo tengo a lo máximo 36 fotos para escoger. Por supuesto, ESA ESPERA para ver ESA FOTO y sale exactamente como te la imaginabas o encontrar esa foto escondida en un rollo viejo, esos sensaciones son incomparables :)

When did you first pick up a camera? And how did it go? // ¿Cuándo fue la primera vez que usaste una camara y cómo te fue?
Honestly, I’ve always liked taking pictures and recording everything but I picked up my first film camera about 5 years ago. It went terribly haha. It was my dad’s camera, a Ricoh KR-5 which took practically all of our family pictures since I can remember so it was pretty meaningful.
Honestamente, siempre me a gustado tomar fotos y grabar de todo pero la primera vez que use una cámara análoga fue como hace 5 años. Y fue horrible jaja. Era la cámara de mi papá, una Ricoh KR-5 que fue la cámara de mi familia y literalmente tomo todas las fotos de cuando era niño, entonces fue muy profunda la conexión.
What or who has influenced you creatively? // ¿Qué o quién te ha influido creativamente?
Music and my fellow immigrants. Music moves me, motivates me, literally provides the creative force for me. The struggle as an immigrant is definitely a driving force. I feel like it is my duty to put my people on, go out there and excel at whatever I am doing because I been very lucky and even with that life has not been easy in the USA. I have to push myself to eventually put others on. Pass on the torch, that’s how we can truly evolve.
La musica y mis inmigrantes. La música me mueve, me motiva, literalmente me proporciona mi fuerza creativa. La lucha de inmigrante definitivamente me a empujado. Siento que es mi deber poner a mi gente a lo alto y ser exitoso en lo que sea. He tenido mucha suerte y aun con eso la vida en no a sido fácil. Tengo que empujarme a mí mismo para eventualmente poner a otros en una plataforma exitosa. Pasar la torcha, siento que así es la única forma de evolucionar.
What do you hope an image will achieve? What is photography to you? // ¿Qué esperas que logre una imagen? ¿Qué es la fotografía para ti?
As long as people see my work as positive and pass that on I am with it. Photography to me is life, memories, who we are. To capture a moment in its essence is absolutely godly. Cheesy and cliche but that’s how I feel!
Con que la gente vea mi trabajo como algo positivo y lo transmita, estaré feliz. La fotografía para mí es la vida, los recuerdos, lo que somos. Capturar un momento en su esencia es absolutamente divino. Medio mamon y cliché, pero ¡así me siento!
What are your top favorite things to do besides photography? // ¿Cuáles son tus cosas favoritas para hacer además de la fotografía?
Hip hop. I work with a hip hop artist from the Bronx, AQ The G.O.D. I assist with the creative direction of videos, music productions, shows and all that jazz.
El hip hop. Trabajo con un artista musical del Bronx, AQ The G.O.D. Ayudo con la dirección creativa de videos, producciones musicales, shows y todo esos rollos.
What’s your favorite time of day? When do you feel most creative? // ¿Cuál es tu momento del día favorito? ¿Cuándo te sientes más creativo?
I am a wanna be morning person and currently failing at it. Night owl hands down. I get distracted easily so I thrive while everyone is sleeping.
Quiero ser una persona mañanera y pero estoy fallando terribilmente. Noctámbulo sin duda. Me distraigo fácilmente, así que prospero mientras todos duermen.
If I could learn something new what would it be? // Si pudiera aprender algo nuevo, ¿qué sería?
I would love to play a music instrument. A trumpet, the sax and the piano. I bought a trumpet a year ago when the pandemic first started with dreams of becoming the next Miles Davis. Hasn’t played out that way so far haha
Me encantaría tocar un instrumento musical. Una trompeta, el saxofón y el piano. Me compré una trompeta hace un año cuando la pandemia comenzó con el sueño de convertirme en el proximo Miles Davis. Podemos decir que ese talento no se ha desarrollado de esa manera
Favorite place where you live? // ¿Lugar favorito en donde vives?
There’s this really dope spot in Dumbo, by the water, under the Manhattan Bridge. At night it’s super quiet, you can hear the trains passing and the water hitting the shore. Don’t tell no one!
Hay un lugar super chido en Dumbo, junto al agua, abajo de el puente de Manhattan. Por la noche se poner muy callado, puedes escuchar trenes y el agua golpeando la orilla. ¡No lo digan a nadie!
What have you got planned for the near future? // ¿Qué tienes planeado para el futuro cercano?
I have a photography project planned that is based on the immigrant life and struggle in the USA. Just working on the execution. Furthermore, this spring I will be starting “ALE HOUSE” a musical experience which will include live musical acts by local artists kind of like a tiny desk but in my magical little apartment with that Brooklyn wave.
Tengo un proyecto de fotografía planeado que se basa en la vida y la lucha de los inmigrantes en los Estados Unidos. Solo estoy trabajando como ejecutar la idea. A parte, esta primavera comenzaré “Ale House”, una experiencia musical que incluirá actos musicales en vivo de artistas locales como un “Tiny Desk” pero en mi pequeño depa mágico con la vibra de Brooklyn.
