Shingi Rice
Fashion Student/Photographer
London/South Spain
Tell us a bit about yourself.
I was born in east London, named Shingi which means courage, to a Zimbabwean mother. At the age of six my parents and I moved to Hampshire,UK and four years later decided to move to Southern Spain.
When did you realize you were meant to be behind the lense?
At 12 my parents bought me my first camera for a trip I had with my school, I didn't have interest in photography but I loved taking pictures of my friends. In my 15th I received a Nikon, again from my parents, by then I had found interest and had created my nickname bluespit. Finally at 20 I got my first DSLR camera and was told that my portfolio was mixed up and needed to find a genre. I have a passion for fashion so I decided to join the two and started shooting friends, people from my city or whoever asked me.
What are your goals?
I've always dreamt of going to NY and "living the dream" but I love traveling so who knows where I'll be. Studying fashion and fashion photography is another which I have finally achieved as I am starting now in September in London, my birthplace.
As having a "passion for fashion", how would you describe your personal style?
It can be very basic and minimalistic, being mostly black or very quirky with different and unique prints. I consider my self a sneaker freaker as I love collecting sneakers.
Name a few favorite fashion designers.
I love quirkiness, so I have to Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood and Jeremy Scott (although he does have his tacky moments).
What's your favorite food?
I love good food and different flavours! My dads an amazing chef so can admit that I get my eating habits from him, and I love cooking with and without him, also my moms African food is delicious! I don't have a favorite dish but I love Japanese food, seafood and fries!
What kind of music do you listen to?
I love dope beats like Lakim, Kaytranada, Danny Brown or Kxngs. Trap, 90's rap, funk, soul, jazz, r&b are my weakness.
What makes you happy?
Seeing and knowing that my parents are, achieving goals and of course designing and taking photos.
Are you here to be famous or inspire?
I want to inspire masses, the same way people inspire me. Very little people know how to inspire, a lot just want to be famous; fame is a drug and people should be remembered for more.
What inspires you?
People inspire me, situations inspire me, places, other peoples work, book, etc..But mostly people. The way that someone carries themselves, their personality, style.
What motivates you?
I had open heart surgery in October 2013 and the "near death" experience really kicked in. That motivates me. You only live once so do as much as you can. You don't wanna be 90 and regretting stuff!!
What will you be remembered for?
My personality, my soul, my work, what I preach.
What do you recommend?
Being kind, speak your mind, keep a journal to document ideas, thoughts, whatever comes to mind and need to me jotted down. Do not try DO IT! And lastly be grateful for the life you live.
Do you have a favorite photoshoot?
Well I have done at least 20-30+ photoshoots in the past 8/9 months and when I think of my favorite or best shoot the first that comes to my mind is the one I had with my friend Uma who is a model, because of her energy, and I don't mean physical energy I mean the way she is, her personality. She transmits so much positivity and is a hard worker in what's she does writer/journalist/model. Her beauty is crazy! I would say she's inspires me a lot and of course she was amazing in front of the camera and would shoot her all the time if I could. Such a beautiful woman inside and out.
Lastly, what quote inspires you?
There are a few but one that comes to mind is:
"The person who wants to do something will find a way, the person who doesn't will finds an excuse."
